The New Man:
It is imperative that each of us change our manner of living once we have
accepted Jesus as our Savior and dedicated our lives to Him. We now claim
to belong to Him, and we call ourselves Christian. We are now, each one of
us, a "new man" (no gender intended with that figure of speech).
Here are some selected verses from the book of Romans, chapter 6, where we
are given some guidance:
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
...
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin
might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
...
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in
the lusts thereof.
...
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but
under grace.
15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace?
God forbid.
...
22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your
fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through
Jesus Christ our Lord. KJV
WE MUST put away those sinning ways (that "old man") and pursue the righteous
life that our Heavenly Father expects of us.
Here are some more verses that clarify the idea:
Eph 4:17-24
17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as
other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God
through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to
work all uncleanness with greediness.
20 But ye have not so learned Christ;
21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is
in Jesus:
22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation
the old man ,
which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in
righteousness and true holiness. KJV
Eph 4:30-32
30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of
redemption.
31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be
put away from you, with all malice:
32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as
God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. KJV
Col 3:1-2
3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where
Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. KJV
Col 3:6-11
6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of
disobedience:
7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice,
blasphemy, filthy
communication out of your mouth.
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his
deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of
him that created him:
11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision,
Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. KJV
... ...
So ............. What happens to a person who abandons Christ?
2 Peter 2:20-22
20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the
knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled
therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness,
than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto
them.
22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned
to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the
mire.
KJV
However, God will never abandon us:
Heb 13:5
5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things
as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. KJV
[quoted from Deuteronomy 31:6]
We must put off the "old man" because to return to our sinful ways, by living
a life away from Christ, we are choosing death ....... an eternal, spiritual death:
John 14:6
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the
truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me . KJV
